Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is delivering the project, with Eastern Bangkok Monorail (BSR consortium: BTSC + Sino-Thai + RATCH) and Alstom (Innovia 300) as main contractors. It opened in 2023, with an investment of USD 1.5 bn.

This 24.1 km metro line (Linha Sul) entered service in Brazil. It comprises 20 stations. The line uses 3 kV DC overhead electrification and 1000 mm metre gauge. Commercial operation began in 2014, following an initial limited-service inauguration in 2012.

This 41.2 km light rail line entered service in Indonesia. It comprises 18 stations and 90 km/h design speed. The line uses 750 V DC third rail electrification, moving-block signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is delivering the project, with PT Adhi Karya and PT INKA as main contractors. It opened in 2023, with an investment of USD 1.5 bn.

Malaysia · Asia

This 37.8 km light rail line entered service in Malaysia. It comprises 20 stations and 2 km of tunnels. The line uses 750 V DC third rail electrification, CBTC signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Prasarana Malaysia is delivering the project, with MRCB-George Kent JV as main contractor. Under construction from 2017, the line opened on 29 June 2026, with a final investment of MYR 21.93 bn (~USD 5.51 bn).

Philippines · Asia

This 12.7 km metro line (heavy rail, originally planned as monorail before the design was switched to conventional heavy metro rail technology) is in procurement in Philippines. It comprises 10 stations. The line uses 1500 V DC third rail electrification, CBTC signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Department of Transportation Philippines (DOTr) is delivering the project. Target opening is 2031, with an investment of USD 7.0 bn.

It opened in 2025, with an investment of AUD 12.8 bn (~USD 8.6 bn).

The line uses 1.5 kV DC overhead electrification, CBTC signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Sydney Metro (Transport for NSW) is delivering the project, with CPB Contractors-Ghella-UGL JV (SSTOM tunnels), Bouygues-Acciona JV (stations enabling) and Parklife Metro consortium (Webuild, Siemens Mobility, RATP Dev, Plenary Group) — SSTOM PPP as main contractors. The line uses 750 V DC overhead electrification, national ATC signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Ethiopian Railways Corporation is delivering the project, with China Railway Engineering Corporation as main contractor. It opened in 2015, with an investment of USD 475 m.

Egypt · Middle East

Conversion of the historic Abu Qir suburban railway into a 22 km, 20-station metro with CBTC and 25 kV AC 50 Hz electrification. Delivered by NAT with NERIC + Hyundai Rotem. EUR 1.76 bn, opening 2028.

India · Asia

This 82.15 km high-speed regional rail line (NaMo Bharat) became fully operational in India on 22 February 2026. It comprises 16 stations and 180 km/h design speed. The line uses 25 kV AC 50 Hz electrification, ERTMS Level 2 signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is delivering the project, with Alstom (rolling stock + signalling), L&T and Afcons as main contractors. Priority corridor (Sahibabad-Duhai, 17km) opened 20 October 2023, with progressive extensions through 2024-2025 and full Sarai Kale Khan-Modipuram completion in Feb 2026. Investment INR 30,274 crore (~USD 3.1 bn).

India · Asia

This 76 km metro line has been approved in India. It comprises 27 stations. The line uses 25 kV AC 50 Hz electrification, CBTC signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited are delivering the project. 7 bn (~USD 3.0 bn).

Mauritius · Africa

This 26 km light rail line runs from Port Louis to Curepipe in Mauritius. It comprises 19 stations. The line uses 750 V DC overhead electrification and 1435 mm standard gauge. Metro Express Ltd is delivering the project, with Larsen & Toubro as main EPC contractor. Built in phases - Phase 1 (Port Louis-Rose Hill) opened 2019/2020, Phase 2A (Rose Hill-Quatre Bornes) in 2021 - the full line to Curepipe entered service in October 2022 (Phase 2B), with a total investment of USD 600 m.

Kenya · Africa

This 472 km rail upgrade entered service in Kenya. It comprises 9 stations and 120 km/h design speed. The line uses diesel traction and 1435 mm standard gauge. Kenya Railways Corporation is delivering the project, with China Road and Bridge Corporation and China Communications Construction Company as main contractors. It opened in 2017, with an investment of USD 3.6 bn.

United States · Americas

This 14.5 km metro line is under construction in United States. The line uses 750 V DC third rail electrification and 1435 mm standard gauge. Under construction since 2014, the line is scheduled to open in 2024, with an investment of USD 6.3 bn.

Vietnam · Asia

This 1541 km high-speed line was approved by Vietnam's National Assembly on 30 November 2024. It comprises 23 passenger stations and 5 freight stations along a 350 km/h design-speed route from Hanoi (Ngoc Hoi) to Ho Chi Minh City (Thu Thiem), through 20 provinces/cities. The line uses 2x25 kV AC 50 Hz electrification, ERTMS Level 2 signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) and Ministry of Construction are delivering the project; construction is expected to begin in 2027, targeting first operations by 2035, at an estimated cost of USD 67.0 bn funded via state budget/bonds without foreign loans.

Mexico · Americas

This 57.56 km commuter rail line is under construction in Mexico. It comprises 8 stations and 130 km/h design speed. The line uses 25 kV AC 60 Hz electrification, ERTMS Level 2 signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. SEDENA is delivering the project, with SEDENA Cuerpo Ingenieros Felipe Ángeles and CRRC Zhuzhou as main contractors. Under construction since 2025, the line is scheduled to open in 2027, with an investment of MXN 44.0 bn (~USD 2.4 bn).

Serbia · Europe

This 182 km rail upgrade entered service in Serbia. It comprises 200 km/h design speed. The line uses 25 kV AC 50 Hz electrification, ERTMS Level 2 signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Infrastruktura Železnice Srbije (IŽS) is delivering the project, with China Railway International Co. Ltd and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) as main contractors. It opened in 2025, with an investment of EUR 938 m (~USD 1.1 bn).

Colombia · Americas

This 24 km metro line is under construction in Colombia. It comprises 16 stations and 90 km/h design speed. The line uses 1500 V DC overhead electrification, CBTC signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Empresa Metro de Bogotá (EMB) is delivering the project, with CHEC-Golder JV (civil) and CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles as main contractors. Under construction since 2021, the line is scheduled to open in 2028, with an investment of USD 4.3 bn.

United States · Americas

This 351 km high-speed line has been approved in United States. It comprises 4 stations and 354 km/h design speed. The line uses 25 kV AC 60 Hz electrification, ERTMS Level 2 signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Brightline West LLC is delivering the project, with Siemens Mobility (AP220 + 30-yr maintenance), Las Vegas Paving (civil) and Grimshaw (architecture) as main contractors. Target opening is 2029, with an investment of USD 21.5 bn.
