Victoria Orders 25 More Alstom X'trapolis 2.0 Trains in €270m Follow-On Deal

The Victorian state government in Australia has exercised a contract option with Alstom for 25 additional X'trapolis 2.0 electric trains, a deal worth €270 million announced on August 4. The order brings the total X'trapolis 2.0 fleet under manufacture at Alstom's Victorian facilities to 50 six-car trainsets.

X'trapolis 2.0 was developed with Victoria's Department of Transport and Planning as a replacement for Melbourne's legacy suburban fleet, which has been in service since the early 1980s. Each six-car train seats up to 1,225 passengers and features a continuous walkthrough design, wider doors, and accessibility upgrades including 20 dedicated wheelchair spaces and mixed-use bike and pram areas. The first unit entered passenger service in May 2026, with further trains being introduced periodically.

The contract carries a 60% local content requirement, a condition designed to sustain Victoria's rail manufacturing supply chain and preserve what Alstom describes as Australia's only sovereign train-building capability. For Melbourne commuters, the follow-on order signals a multi-year fleet renewal is now firmly under way, rather than a one-off pilot batch.
