Alstom Secures €270m Option for 25 More X'trapolis 2.0 Trains in Victoria

Alstom has been awarded a €270 million contract by the Victorian government through the exercise of an option for 25 additional X'trapolis 2.0 electric trains, the company confirmed on 4 August. The order supplements 25 trains already being delivered under the original contract signed in 2021, bringing the total fleet on order to 50.

X'trapolis 2.0 is a six-car electric train developed with Victoria's Department of Transport and Planning, with a total capacity of 1,225 passengers and featuring a continuous walkthrough design, wider doors, 20 dedicated wheelchair spaces and assistive hearing technology. The first unit entered passenger service in May 2026, with further trains scheduled to join the fleet periodically to replace ageing rolling stock on Melbourne's metro network.

The contract carries a 60% local-content requirement, and Alstom said exercising the option secures hundreds of manufacturing jobs across metropolitan and regional Victoria and supports the state's wider rail supply chain. The value of the original 2021 order was not restated alongside the new figure.

The order is separate from Melbourne's Next Generation Tram programme, a different, earlier A$700 million contract for light-rail vehicles that also began entering passenger service this year.
