European rail procurement runs at scale — and most of it is scattered across dozens of separate national portals. Right now Railex tracks 3,612 open rail tenders, from single maintenance lots to multi-billion-euro rolling-stock frameworks. For a supplier, the problem is no longer scarcity of opportunity. It is knowing which of them is yours to win, and noticing before the deadline passes.

This brief is a snapshot of that landscape: the countries putting the most work out to bid, the categories where budgets concentrate, and the largest contracts closing in the weeks ahead.

    Where the work is

France and Germany dominate by sheer count of open procedures, but the money tells a different story: a single Czech or Italian rolling-stock framework can outweigh hundreds of small German maintenance lots. Count and value are two different maps — read both.

    * Value shown is contract value disclosed by the buyer. Only ~28% of open tenders publish a figure, so national totals understate the real market — Germany's low euro figure reflects disclosure practice, not a small market. Bars rank by count of open procedures.

    What's being bought

Nearly half of all open rail tenders are civil infrastructure — track, earthworks, structures. But the high-technology, higher-margin categories a specialist lives in — signalling, rolling stock, electrification — together account for over 780 open procedures this quarter.

A curated set of the largest railway-confirmed contracts with a published deadline in the weeks ahead. Rolling stock leads: Central Europe is re-fleeting with battery and zero-emission trains.

    The near-term bid calendar

Of the tenders open today that carry a published deadline, most close within three months — August alone sees 826 close, worth €32B. Read it as a bid calendar, not a market forecast: it reflects what is open and dated right now, not future publication.

What it means if you bid

    • 1
Volume is not your problem — coverage is.

With tenders open in 57 countries and 1,034 closing inside a month, the risk isn't a dry pipeline. It's a relevant contract on a national portal you don't monitor, found the week after it closed.

    • 2
Follow the value, not the count.

Czechia and Italy carry more disclosed value than Germany despite a fraction of the procedures. If you sell rolling stock or signalling, Central Europe's re-fleeting wave is where the large frameworks are.

    • 3
      Deadlines are the real filter.

The marquee contracts above close in the next two months and are worth €23B combined. Winning starts with a bid calendar, not a search box.

    Method & sources

Figures are drawn from the Railex tender database as of 29 July 2026, covering public rail procurement across the EU, EEA, UK and neighbouring markets. "Open" means a tender confirmed as railway-relevant and not yet closed or awarded. Contract values are those disclosed by the contracting authority; roughly 28% of open tenders publish a value and 45% a firm deadline, so aggregate figures are conservative and understate the true market. Country counts rank by number of open procedures.
