Australia: First Alstom G Class Tram Enters Passenger Service in Melbourne

The first next-generation G Class tram built by Alstom entered passenger service in Melbourne on 31 July 2026, the manufacturer said, marking the start of deliveries under a contract for 100 vehicles worth around EUR700 million.

The trams are built at Alstom's Dandenong site in Victoria, supported by more than AUD40 million of capital investment, and the programme sustains over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. A purpose-built maintenance facility has been established at Maidstone in Melbourne. More than 80% of the vehicles currently running on Melbourne's tram network -- the world's largest -- were built at Dandenong over the site's 70-year history.

Based on Alstom's Flexity 2 platform and customised for Melbourne, the G Class is fully low-floor with regenerative braking, additional doors and wider aisles, and capacity for more than 150 passengers. Alstom said the design was developed with input from more than 1,000 stakeholders, including disability groups, drivers, the Public Transport Users Association and passenger representatives.
