    Scope

Defines fire behaviour requirements and test methods for materials and components used in railway vehicles, assigning requirement sets against hazard levels HL1-HL3 derived from the operation and design categories of EN 45545-1. It is the reference standard for fire-safety qualification of interiors, cables and components, used by vehicle manufacturers, material suppliers, test laboratories and notified bodies for LOC&PAS TSI compliance.

EN 45545-2 defines the fire behaviour requirements and associated test methods for materials and components used in the construction and fitting-out of railway vehicles, assigning specific requirement sets to each material or component application based on the hazard level (HL1 to HL3) derived from the vehicle's operating and design categories set out in EN 45545-1. It covers materials as varied as interior linings, seating, cabling, and structural and non-structural components, specifying fire reaction properties such as flame spread, heat release and smoke and toxic gas generation that each must meet according to its assigned hazard level. Vehicle manufacturers, material and component suppliers, and accredited test laboratories use the standard throughout the supply chain: suppliers test and certify individual materials, and manufacturers assemble documented evidence that the complete vehicle meets the fire safety requirements applicable to its category. Notified bodies rely on this documented evidence when assessing compliance with the fire safety provisions of the TSI for locomotives and passenger rolling stock (LOC&PAS) during vehicle type authorisation. The current edition in force is EN 45545-2:2020+A1:2023.
