Scope
Specifies minimum structural requirements for railway vehicle bodies by design category, defining the proof and fatigue loads carbodies must sustain and the principles for design validation by analysis and testing. It is the baseline for carbody structural design of locomotives and passenger rolling stock, used together with EN 15227 for crashworthiness.
EN 12663-1 specifies the minimum structural requirements for the carbodies of locomotives and passenger rolling stock, defining the static proof loads and fatigue load cases a vehicle structure must withstand according to its assigned design category, along with the principles for validating the design by calculation and by physical testing. The standard classifies vehicles into structural categories reflecting their intended service (e.g. main line, metro, or vehicles designed to specific collision scenarios), each associated with a distinct set of load requirements. It is the baseline structural design standard used by carbody manufacturers and design assessors, and is applied together with EN 15227 for passive-safety and crashworthiness requirements, since the two standards address complementary aspects of structural integrity. Part 1 covers locomotives and passenger rolling stock and also provides an alternative calculation method applicable to freight wagons, extending its practical scope beyond passenger equipment. The current consolidated edition, EN 12663-1:2010+A2:2023, is the version manufacturers and assessors currently apply for structural type approval.
