Scope
Specifies the method for defining the structural requirements of bogie frames, covering exceptional and service load cases, design assessment by calculation, static and fatigue testing, and manufacturing quality requirements. Bogie designers, manufacturers and assessors use it for design validation of bogie frames, bolsters and axlebox housings on new rolling stock.
EN 13749 specifies the method for defining and verifying the structural requirements of bogie frames, covering the exceptional and normal service load cases a bogie frame must withstand, the design assessment procedures based on calculation, and the static and fatigue testing regimes used to validate a design before it enters service. It applies to the structural elements of the bogie assembly, including the frame itself, bolsters and axlebox housings, setting out the acceptance criteria bogie designers and manufacturers must meet. Bogie manufacturers use the standard during the design phase to size structural members and welds, and independent assessors reference it when reviewing structural calculation reports and witnessing physical test campaigns as part of vehicle type approval. It works alongside the applicable welding-qualification requirements and the standard vehicle mass definitions used elsewhere in rolling stock design, since bogie frame design load cases depend directly on the vehicle's declared reference masses. The current edition in force is EN 13749:2021+A1:2023.
