Indian Railways Names 15 Stations for PPP-Model Redevelopment
India's Ministry of Railways has identified 15 stations for redevelopment under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha on August 7, in a written reply outlining the next phase of the country's station modernisation drive.
The list spans major hubs including Chennai Central, Bengaluru's KSR station, Pune, Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, Vadodara, Coimbatore Junction, Bhopal, Avadi, Tambaram and several Mumbai suburban stations — Andheri, Dadar and Kalyan. The projects sit within the broader Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which targets upgrades across more than 1,300 stations nationwide, with Bhopal's earlier-redeveloped Rani Kamalapati station — commissioned under a prior PPP framework — cited as the reference model for the new Bhopal station on this list and the wider scheme.
Progress is uneven: the tender for Vijayawada, one of the earliest PPP candidates, drew no bids and has been re-invited, while the remaining 14 stations are still at the master-planning and financial-modelling stage. The Rail Land Development Authority is offering investors viability gap funding of up to 40% of project costs to improve bankability.
For contractors, developers and station-area investors, the list signals where India's next wave of railway real estate and infrastructure tenders is likely to emerge over the coming year.
