    Scope

Specifies the EuroRadio Functional Interface Specification, the safety-related application-layer protocol carried over GSM-R (and, in later baselines, FRMCS) that provides secure radio communication between trackside RBC/RIU and onboard ETCS equipment. It is a mandatory CCS TSI reference underpinning ETCS Level 2/3 radio-based train control and is used by suppliers and Notified Bodies for radio-interface conformity assessment.

SUBSET-037 specifies the EuroRadio Functional Interface Specification, the safety-related application-layer communication protocol carried over the GSM-R radio bearer -- and, in later baselines, over the FRMCS successor system -- that provides secure, authenticated radio communication between trackside Radio Block Centres (RBC) or Radio Infill Units (RIU) and onboard ETCS equipment. It defines the message formats, safety mechanisms and connection-establishment procedures needed to ensure that safety-critical movement authority and other ETCS messages exchanged over an inherently less-trustworthy public mobile radio bearer can be relied upon with the required level of safety integrity. As a mandatory reference in Appendix A of the CCS TSI, it underpins ETCS Level 2 and Level 3 operation, where trains receive their movement authorities via continuous radio communication rather than solely through trackside signals or balises. Suppliers of trackside RBC/RIU equipment and onboard radio equipment implement the specification to ensure interoperability, and Notified Bodies use it as the interface reference during radio-interface conformity assessment. The current edition is version 3.2.0, dated 17 December 2015, developed and released by UNISIG.
