Scope

Defines the terms, definitions and abbreviations used consistently across the whole set of ERTMS/ETCS SUBSET specifications. It is the reference glossary that signalling engineers, suppliers and Notified Bodies consult when interpreting any other SUBSET document, and is itself part of the CCS TSI Annex A specification set.

SUBSET-023 is the glossary of terms and abbreviations used consistently across the entire set of ERTMS/ETCS SUBSET specifications, defining each technical term and abbreviation once so that every other SUBSET document can rely on a shared, unambiguous vocabulary. It is maintained jointly by ERA, UNISIG and the EEIG ERTMS Users Group, the same governance structure responsible for the technical content of the wider SUBSET specification set. Signalling engineers, suppliers and Notified Bodies consult it whenever interpreting terminology in any other SUBSET document, from the System Requirements Specification to the interface specifications for balises, radio and train interfaces, making it a foundational reference document rather than a technical requirements specification in its own right. It is itself part of the specification set listed in Annex A of the CCS TSI, since consistent terminology is essential to the correct application of the mandatory ETCS specifications.
