Scope
The Functional Interface Specification between the ETCS on-board and the train: which functions the ERTMS/ETCS equipment commands or observes on the vehicle side — service and emergency brake, traction cut-off, pantograph and main switch, doors, cab status — and the functional conditions for each exchange.
SUBSET-034 defines what the ETCS on-board is allowed to ask of the train and what the train must tell it: brake commands and their feedback, traction interfaces, special-function commands driven by track conditions (lower pantograph, open circuit breaker, air tightness), cab and direction status, and the train-integrity related information. It is the functional layer that SUBSET-119 (Train Interface FFFIS) turns into a standardised physical/protocol interface; retrofit projects live inside these two documents, because integrating the ETCS brake and traction interfaces with a legacy vehicle is routinely the hardest part of an on-board installation. Mandatory at v4.0.0 via Annex A of the 2023 CCS TSI, and used by on-board suppliers, vehicle integrators and NoBos assessing on-board subsystems.
