Scope
Specifies requirements for the design, manufacture, documentation and testing of electronic equipment installed on board rolling stock — control, regulation, protection, diagnostic and power-supply electronics, including sensors and semiconductor drive units. It defines the environmental and electrical operating conditions (temperature, humidity, shock and vibration, supply variations) such equipment must withstand, making it the baseline qualification standard used by vehicle manufacturers, on-board equipment suppliers and assessors. The 2026 edition supersedes EN 50155:2021.
EN 50155 specifies requirements for the design, manufacture, documentation and testing of electronic equipment installed on board railway rolling stock, covering control, regulation, protection, diagnostic and power-supply electronics together with associated sensors and semiconductor drive units. It defines the environmental and electrical operating conditions such equipment must be shown to withstand -- including ambient temperature range, humidity, mechanical shock and vibration, and variations in on-board supply voltage -- building directly on the environmental classes established elsewhere in the CENELEC rolling stock standards. As the baseline qualification standard for on-board electronics, it is used by vehicle manufacturers, electronic equipment suppliers and independent assessors throughout procurement, type testing and acceptance of on-board control and diagnostic systems. Its scope covers the equipment itself rather than the software running on it, which instead falls under the separate railway software development standard. The 2026 edition supersedes EN 50155:2021 and is the version currently applied for qualification of new on-board electronic equipment.
