EN 16186-1 — Railway applications — Driver's cab — Part 1: Anthropometric data and visibility (series 16186-1 to -8)

Scope

Specifies anthropometric reference data and forward-visibility requirements for the driver's cab of mainline rolling stock — the geometric basis for cab layout, driver eye-reference points and sightline design. Part of an 8-part EN 16186 series split into a mainline sub-series (Parts 1-4: visibility, display integration, display design, layout/access) and a parallel tram sub-series (Parts 5-8); Parts 1, 2 and 3 are harmonised under the Interoperability Directive.

EN 16186-1 gives the driver's cab its geometric starting point: the anthropometric manikin and percentile ranges the cab must accommodate, the driver's eye-reference point, and the forward-visibility envelope — the angles and distances a driver must be able to see signals, the track and platforms — that everything else in the cab (desk height, display placement, pillar-obstruction limits) is designed around. Part 2 then specifies how displays, controls and indicators are integrated into that layout, and Part 3 the design of the displays themselves for heavy-rail vehicles; a fourth mainline part (EN 16186-4:2019, layout and access) exists but has not been added to the OJ-harmonised list. A parallel tram-specific sub-series (Parts 5 to 8, published 2021-2025) mirrors the same four topics for light rail and is not TSI-harmonised, tram design being outside Directive (EU) 2016/797's scope. Parts 1, 2 and 3 are harmonised standards under Implementing Decision (EU) 2023/2584 (Annex I rows 59-61), giving presumption of conformity with the driver's-cab essential requirements of TSI LOC&PAS. Note a genuine edition discrepancy worth flagging in any conformity file: the Official Journal cites the Part 1 base edition as EN 16186-1:2014+A1:2018, while CENELEC's current national-mirror catalogues (evs.ee, BSI) list the base edition as EN 16186-1:2015+A1:2018 — same amendment, one year's difference in the cited base year, not yet reconciled in the sources checked. Used by cab-interior designers, driver's-desk and display suppliers, and NoBos assessing ergonomics and visibility conformity.
