Scope

Specifies the basic requirements for the brake system of trains hauled by locomotives — the UIC-compatible automatic air brake architecture, its pneumatic interfaces, brake positions and the performance the assembled train must achieve — for vehicles used in general operation and in fixed or predefined formations.

EN 14198 is the system-level standard that makes a locomotive-hauled consist brake as one train: it fixes the brake-pipe based architecture every vehicle must be compatible with, the G/P/R brake positions and changeover requirements, the interfaces between locomotive and hauled stock, and the braking performance demonstration for the train as a whole. It sits between the vehicle-level product standards (brake blocks, WSP, distributors) and the operational braked-weight framework of IRS 50544-1, and it is cited in the OJ under the Interoperability Directive, giving presumption of conformity for the corresponding TSI LOC&PAS braking requirements. Used by locomotive and coach manufacturers, wagon designers and NoBos assessing braking conformity.
