    Project overview

    A comprehensive 190km modernisation of the Beira Alta line from Pampilhosa to Vilar Formoso at the Spanish border, completed on 28 September 2025. The €600M project delivered 25kV electrification, ETCS Level 2 signalling, GSM-R telecommunications, a new 3.2km Mealhada Chord (freight bypass to the Northern Line), and 10 passing loops for 750m freight trains. Civil works by COMSA+Fergrupo. Part of the North International Corridor connecting Portugal to Spain and Central Europe.
