Scope
IEC 62928 specifies the design, operating parameters, safety recommendations, data exchange and routine/type-test requirements for onboard lithium-ion traction batteries used as the energy storage system for railway vehicle traction, including hybrid and battery-electric rolling stock. It covers the battery system and its subcomponents, including the battery management system (BMS) and battery thermal management system (BTMS), while excluding auxiliary batteries that power only onboard auxiliary equipment. As battery-electric and hybrid traction becomes mainstream, it is the reference international standard cited by traction-battery suppliers and rolling-stock builders.
