    Scope

Specifies the requirements, interfaces and test methods for a series-hybrid onboard power-supply architecture that combines a primary power source (overhead line, diesel genset or fuel cell) with an onboard energy storage system — batteries or supercapacitors — to power traction. First edition (2016), single part to date; no Part 2 has been published.

IEC 62864-1 standardises how an onboard energy storage system is sized, interfaced and tested when it sits in a series-hybrid power chain: the functional architecture linking primary source, storage system and traction converter, the electrical and control interfaces between them, energy-management functions such as state-of-charge management and power-split strategy, and the acceptance tests that demonstrate the storage system delivers its rated power and energy safely across the vehicle's duty cycle. It complements — rather than duplicates — the cell- and pack-level safety and performance requirements of IEC 62928 (onboard traction batteries), addressing instead the system-level integration of storage into the vehicle's power supply. The standard is the reference for manufacturers and integrators of hybrid and battery-electric multiple units, shunting and mainline hybrid locomotives, and any rolling-stock programme replacing part of a diesel or electrified duty cycle with stored energy — a fast-growing segment as operators pursue non-electrified-route decarbonisation. It is typically read alongside IEC 61287-1 for the associated power converters and IEC 62928 for the storage cells themselves.
