Scope
Specifies the functional requirements for an on-board driving data recording system (ODDRS) — the railway "black box" that continuously logs speed, braking, signalling and driver-action data for incident investigation, performance monitoring and regulatory record-keeping. Part 1 covers the system specification; Part 2 (2016) adds the conformity-testing procedure. Corrigendum 1 (2016) is folded into the current edition.
IEC 62625-1 defines what an on-board recorder must capture and how reliably it must keep it: the mandatory and optional data categories (speed, direction, braking commands and status, doors, signalling information received, driver inputs), sampling rates and time-stamping accuracy, the crash-survivable memory requirements for the protected recording medium, data-integrity and tamper-evidence provisions, and the interfaces for downloading recorded data after an incident or for routine analysis. Part 2 complements it with the type-testing regime — including the mechanical shock, fire and crush tests the protected memory module must survive — that a conformity-assessment body uses to certify a recorder design. Recorders built to this specification are what accident investigators, safety authorities and operators rely on to reconstruct events after an incident, and increasingly also feed driving-style and energy-efficiency analytics programmes during normal operation. It is used by recorder manufacturers, vehicle integrators specifying the onboard recording function, and national investigation bodies defining what evidence a recorder must preserve. A Part 3 covering audio/video recording has been reported at committee-draft stage but is not yet a published IEC standard, and should not be treated as available for citation.
