Scope

Defines the quality requirements and certification levels that manufacturers must meet to weld railway vehicles and components, including welding coordination personnel and workshop capability requirements. Certification against this part, issued by recognised certification bodies, is the de-facto market-access requirement for suppliers of welded rail vehicle structures such as carbodies and bogie frames.

EN 15085-2 defines the quality requirements and certification levels that manufacturers must satisfy to be authorised to weld railway vehicles and their components, covering the qualification of welding coordination personnel, the competence of welding operators, and the manufacturing and quality-management capability the workshop must demonstrate. It establishes a tiered certification scheme (CL1 to CL4) corresponding to the criticality of the welded structures a manufacturer is authorised to produce, ranging from safety-critical load-bearing structures down to non-structural components. Certification against this Part, issued by an accredited or recognised certification body, has become the de-facto market-access requirement for suppliers of welded rail vehicle structures such as carbodies and bogie frames, since railway undertakings and vehicle integrators typically require it as a procurement precondition. It is applied together with the applicable structural design standards, which define the load-bearing requirements the welded structures produced under this certification must ultimately satisfy. The current edition in force is EN 15085-2:2020+A2:2025.
