    Scope

Establishes the European Register of Authorised Types of Vehicles, specifying its content, data format and the data-entry obligations of national safety authorities and ERA. Every vehicle type authorised in the EU is recorded with its technical characteristics and authorisation status per Member State, providing the reference for authorisations in conformity to type.

Implementing Decision 2011/665/EU establishes the European Register of Authorised Types of Vehicles (ERATV), specifying the data content, format and update obligations that apply once a vehicle type has been authorised for placing on the market anywhere in the EU. Each entry records the technical characteristics of the authorised type together with the authorisation status and applicable restrictions in every Member State where it has been authorised, restricted or refused. National safety authorities are responsible for notifying ERA of authorisation decisions so the register stays current, while the European Union Agency for Railways operates the underlying database and public interface. The register underpins the 'authorisation in conformity to type' route, letting an applicant reference an already-authorised type instead of repeating a full vehicle authorisation. The Decision has been amended over time and was last consolidated on 27 April 2025, reflecting the transition of authorisation competence to ERA under the Fourth Railway Package.
