Project overview
This 15.7 km, 16-station light rail line (Malabe-Fort) in Sri Lanka was effectively cancelled: on 9 July 2026 Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake told Parliament the JICA-backed LRT project "cannot proceed" due to high cost and low projected ridership, with government now prioritising a Metro Bus alternative instead. Investment had been estimated at USD 1.85-2.2 bn.
