Évora–Elvas New Line (Nova Linha de Évora)
Portugal · Europe · Rail Upgrade
Project overview
A ~EUR500M new 100km standard-gauge line connecting Evora to Elvas at the Spanish border. Co-financed with EUR235M from CEF. Designed for mixed traffic (750m freight trains + high-speed passenger services). Physical infrastructure essentially complete as of January 2026 (inspection trip 16 Jan 2026); commercial freight service targeted December 2026 with passenger service soon after (safety certification, signal testing and cross-border coordination pending). This is the missing link in the Sines/Setubal ports to Madrid freight and passenger corridor. Note: "completion by 2034" refers to the wider Lisbon-Madrid high-speed corridor as a whole, not this already-built Evora-Elvas segment.
