Electrification of the 141km Algarve coast railway (Faro-Lagos-Vila Real de Santo Antonio) at 25kV AC, completed and opened to full commercial electric service on 19 July 2026, replacing decades-old diesel traction. Total investment EUR135M (approx USD147M), higher than earlier EUR89M estimates. New signalling and telecom systems included.
