Palermo–Catania Rail Upgrade

Project overview

Modernizing 178 km of track in Sicily, this project represents an estimated €8 billion in total investment for the Fiumetorto-Bicocca corridor (with €3.4 billion already activated for priority phases 1-2) to establish a direct two-hour rail link between the island's major cities. RFI is implementing high-capacity standards and ERTMS signaling to support speeds of 200 km/h along the Fiumetorto-Bicocca section. The project is a centerpiece of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor and benefits from innovative European Investment Bank financing.
