Catania–Messina Rail Upgrade

Project overview

Creating 43 km of new double-track railway with 37 km in tunnels, this €2.25 billion project modernizes the connection between Sicily's second and third largest cities. RFI commenced works on the Taormina-Fiumefreddo section in March 2023, deploying advanced tunneling technology through volcanic terrain. The upgrade will dramatically reduce journey times and provide reliable service along the eastern Sicilian coast.
