Project overview
This 286 km maglev line is under construction in Japan (Tokyo-Nagoya section: 285.6 km). It comprises 505 km/h design speed. The line uses national ATC signalling and 1435 mm standard gauge. Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) is delivering the project, with Kajima Corporation, Shimizu Corporation and Obayashi Corporation as main contractors. Under construction since 2014; JR Central announced in 2024 that the originally planned 2027 opening was impossible, and in 2025 pushed the Tokyo-Nagoya target to no earlier than 2035 (Nagoya-Osaka to no earlier than 2037). Total programme cost exceeds JPY 9.0 trillion (~USD 65.0 bn at current FX).
