NS Unveils Special Train Based on 8-Year-Old's Drawing at Utrecht Station
Nederlandse Spoorwegen unveiled a specially decorated train at Utrecht Maliebaan station based on a drawing by 8-year-old Phileine from Zutphen, who won a national children's design contest with over 1,200 entries.
This passenger engagement initiative demonstrates how rail operators are using customer-focused marketing to build brand loyalty and public support for rail transport. The contest generated significant media coverage and community engagement across the Netherlands, providing NS with positive publicity while encouraging children's interest in rail travel. Such initiatives can strengthen public perception of railways as community-focused services rather than purely commercial operations.
The contest invited children to design their dream train, receiving submissions featuring jungle trains, flying locomotives, and fantasy creatures. Phileine's winning design depicted colorful friendly characters specifically drawn to appeal to younger children without frightening them. The jury selected her entry unanimously from the field of over 1,200 submissions. NS worked with illustrator Jip Piet to adapt Phileine's original drawing into a complete livery design suitable for application to a revenue-earning passenger train.
The "cute monsters train" reflects broader industry efforts to improve public engagement with rail services through creative marketing campaigns. Similar passenger-focused initiatives by European operators have included themed trains, station art installations, and community design competitions. Such programs help railways maintain their social license to operate while building positive associations with rail travel among future passengers.
