Rail Delivery Group Launches Digital PlusBus eTicket Across UK Networks
Rail Delivery Group has launched a digital version of the PlusBus ticket across the UK, enabling passengers to combine rail and local bus or tram travel through a single eTicket purchase. The nationwide rollout follows a successful trial period and covers most areas across Britain.
The digital ticketing integration addresses a critical gap in UK public transport connectivity that has limited seamless multimodal journeys. By eliminating the need for separate ticket purchases across different operators, the system reduces passenger friction and creates potential for increased public transport adoption. The move positions UK rail operators to compete more effectively with private car usage by simplifying the complete door-to-door journey experience.
Rail Delivery Group developed the digital PlusBus system in partnership with Traveline, the national public transport information service. The eTicket format replaces the previous paper-based PlusBus system that required physical collection or posting. Passengers can now purchase combined rail and local transport tickets through existing digital channels, with the local transport component activated automatically upon arrival at their destination station.
The original PlusBus concept has operated for over two decades, allowing rail passengers to add local bus and tram travel to their train tickets for a fixed daily rate. The digital upgrade represents part of the UK rail industry's broader digitization strategy, following similar integrated ticketing developments in European markets including Switzerland's national transport app and Germany's Deutschland-Ticket. The system now positions UK operators to explore dynamic pricing models and real-time capacity management across multiple transport modes.
