Scope

AREMA's annual, roughly 6,100-page manual of recommended practices for the engineering, design, construction, and maintenance of railway track, structures, and infrastructure, published each spring in four volumes (Track, Structures, Infrastructure & Passenger, Systems Management). It is the primary engineering reference for the North American freight and passenger rail industry outside of federal regulation.

The Manual for Railway Engineering (MRE), published annually by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), is a roughly 6,100-page compilation of recommended practices for the engineering, design, construction and maintenance of railway track, structures and related infrastructure in North America. It is organised into four volumes -- Track, Structures, Infrastructure and Passenger, and Systems Management -- each covering recommended practices for its respective engineering discipline, and is republished each spring as a new annual edition reflecting updates agreed through AREMA's committee process. Outside the areas covered by federal regulation, the MRE serves as the primary engineering reference for the North American freight and passenger rail industry, filling much of the role that harmonised European standards such as the CEN infrastructure series occupy in the EU system, though as an industry-developed recommended practice rather than a regulatory requirement. Track, structures and infrastructure engineers working for North American railroads and engineering consultancies use the relevant volume as their day-to-day design and maintenance reference. Access to the current 2026 edition is on a paid basis through AREMA's publications portal, sold either by complete manual or by individual volume or chapter.
