Scope
Specifies the functional requirements, accuracy and validation of measurements of the dynamic pantograph-overhead contact line interaction, including contact force, uplift at supports and arcing. It is the reference line-test method for demonstrating current-collection quality in TSI Energy and rolling stock conformity assessment.
EN 50317 specifies the functional requirements, accuracy criteria and validation procedures for measuring the dynamic interaction between a pantograph and the overhead contact line, covering parameters such as contact force, uplift of the contact wire at supports, and electrical arcing during current collection. It defines the instrumentation and measurement conditions needed to obtain results that reliably represent the actual current-collection performance of a given pantograph-OCL combination under operational speed conditions. The standard is the reference line-test method used to demonstrate current-collection quality as part of conformity assessment under the energy subsystem TSI and during rolling stock authorisation, and its measurement results also serve as the validation reference for simulation tools qualified under EN 50318. Together with EN 50318 and the compatibility criteria of EN 50367, it completes the current-collection compatibility set that governs how pantographs and overhead contact lines are shown to work together safely and efficiently. The current edition in force is EN 50317:2012+A1:2022.
