    Scope

    Specifies requirements, design rules and verification tests for overhead contact line systems supplying electric traction power on heavy rail, light rail, trolleybus and industrial railways, covering mechanical and electrical design, structures, clearances and rigid overhead conductor rail systems. The 2020 edition supersedes EN 50119:2009+A1:2013 and adds provisions for urban mass transportation. Core reference for infrastructure managers, OCL designers and suppliers of electrification equipment.

    EN 50119 specifies the requirements, design rules and verification tests for overhead contact line (OCL) systems that supply electric traction power, covering heavy rail, light rail, trolleybus and industrial railway applications, including both catenary-suspended contact wire systems and rigid overhead conductor rail systems used in constrained clearances such as tunnels. It sets out mechanical design requirements for OCL structures, conductors and tensioning systems, electrical clearance requirements, and the verification tests a completed installation must pass before entering service. The 2020 edition supersedes EN 50119:2009+A1:2013 and adds specific provisions addressing urban mass transportation systems, which had not been comprehensively covered in the previous edition. It is the core reference standard used by infrastructure managers, overhead contact line designers and equipment suppliers when specifying, designing and accepting new or renewed electrification infrastructure. The current edition in force is EN 50119:2020, with no further amendment currently recorded.
