Scope

Provides a harmonised classification, coding and management framework for rail defects in track, supporting defect identification, recording and remediation decisions. It is the European reference for rail defect management used by infrastructure managers and maintenance contractors, in the role long played by the UIC rail defect catalogue.

EN 17397-1 provides a harmonised European classification, coding and management framework for rail defects occurring in track, giving infrastructure managers and maintenance contractors a common system for identifying, recording and deciding remedial action for defects found during inspection or measurement. It defines defect categories by their location within the rail cross-section, their visual appearance and their probable cause, structured so that defect records remain comparable across different infrastructure managers and national networks. The standard was developed to give the European rail sector its own harmonised defect classification framework, filling the role previously played, in the absence of a European standard, by the UIC's rail defect catalogue (UIC IRS 70712), which many infrastructure managers had used as a de-facto reference. Its adoption supports more consistent defect statistics and maintenance planning benchmarking across infrastructure managers operating under the same EN 17397 classification system. The current edition in force is EN 17397-1:2020.
