Scope
Specifies requirements for the design, construction and operation of platform barrier systems — including platform screen doors and platform edge doors — positioned at the edge of a station platform to prevent passenger falls onto the track and to control the platform-train interface. First and only edition (2021); not cited in the OJ under the Interoperability Directive.
EN 17168 is the product and system standard for the physical barrier — full-height screen, half-height gate, or edge-door assembly synchronised with train doors — that separates a station platform from the track. It covers the mechanical design and structural requirements of the barrier, the door-synchronisation and interlocking logic with the train (so barrier doors and vehicle doors open and close together and neither moves unless the other is correctly aligned and the train is correctly berthed), obstacle-detection and safety-interlock requirements, and the operational and maintenance provisions needed to keep the interlock trustworthy over the asset's life. Platform barrier systems are now close to standard practice on new-build driverless and high-frequency metro lines, and increasingly specified on busy suburban and high-speed platforms for both safety and, on driverless lines, security reasons; EN 17168 is the reference tender and design specifications converge on. Because it addresses station infrastructure rather than an interoperability constituent, it sits outside Directive (EU) 2016/797's scope and carries no presumption of conformity — a purely voluntary but widely adopted reference. Used by platform-screen-door system integrators, station designers and infrastructure managers, alongside train-borne door-control interfaces defined in each rolling-stock programme's own specification.
