
90-Second Power Outage at Manchester Rail Control Centre Triggers Two Days of Disruption
A 90-second power failure at the Manchester Rail Operating Centre, the control hub for railways across north-west England, triggered two days of significant service disruption, according to reports.
The outage, caused by a transformer fault, cut power to the centre for around 5,000 customers just before 2pm on Thursday, 6 August. Network Rail's back-up generators reportedly failed to activate immediately, knocking out signalling systems and bringing trains across the North West, the Midlands and as far as Wales to a standstill.
Although power and signalling were restored within minutes, the knock-on effect proved far harder to unwind: services on the West Coast Main Line, plus East Midlands Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales, remained disrupted into Friday, 7 August as trains and crews ended up out of position.
The scale of disruption from such a brief outage has drawn criticism of Network Rail's resilience planning, with rail industry commentators, including engineer Gareth Dennis, pointing to reduced state funding and recent staff cuts as contributing factors. An investigation into the failure has been launched; as of mid-August, Network Rail has not published its findings.
For infrastructure managers, the incident is a pointed reminder that backup power and rapid-recovery protocols at critical control centres are only as good as their last real-world test: a 90-second fault escalated into 48 hours of network-wide knock-on delays.
