Deutsche Bahn Puts DB Cargo UK Up for Sale as EU Restructuring Deal Bites
Deutsche Bahn has launched a formal sale process for DB Cargo UK, one of Britain's largest rail freight operators, as its German parent refocuses on its home and central European markets.
Advisers at Interpath have been appointed to run a structured auction, and talks with prospective bidders are reportedly already underway. DB Cargo UK employs around 2,200 people and runs freight, infrastructure and passenger charter services across the UK, as well as Channel Tunnel freight links to mainland Europe.
The divestment follows the European Commission's approval of €1.9 billion in German state aid for DB Cargo, granted on condition that the company carry out a sweeping restructuring programme and shed assets outside its core central European market by the end of 2026. DB Cargo UK falls outside that core footprint, making it a target for disposal.
For the UK freight sector, the sale raises questions about long-term ownership, investment and strategic direction at a time when rail freight operators are already navigating tight margins and competition for network capacity. A new owner with fresh investment capacity could reshape DB Cargo UK's position in the market, though the outcome of the auction, and who might bid, remains unclear.
