Norfolk Southern and Wabtec Expand Locomotive Modernisation to 33 More Units

Norfolk Southern and Wabtec have expanded their locomotive modernisation programme to cover 33 more GE Evolution Series ES44DC diesel-electric locomotives, converting them from DC to AC traction as the units are rebuilt into ES44ACM configuration.

The upgrade package includes new AC traction motors, modernised control systems and updated digital diagnostics technology, intended to improve wheel-to-rail adhesion, increase hauling capability, and give Norfolk Southern's maintenance teams better visibility into locomotive health. Wabtec says the conversions also extend the service life of existing units, an alternative to retiring older locomotives outright.

The first rebuilt locomotive was returned to Norfolk Southern in August, with the remaining units scheduled for delivery through 2027.

The programme builds on a modernisation relationship between the two companies dating back to 2015, during which more than 1,000 DC-to-AC conversions have been completed across North American freight railroads. For Norfolk Southern, the expanded deal signals continued investment in its existing diesel fleet even as the broader industry weighs longer-term questions around locomotive electrification and alternative propulsion.

For suppliers and maintenance providers, the deal is a reminder that fleet modernisation - rather than wholesale replacement - remains a significant near-term revenue stream in North American freight rail.
