Indonesia: President Prabowo Orders Resumption of Trans-Sumatra and Trans-Kalimantan Railway Plans

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto ordered state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and the Ministry of Transportation to proceed with the Trans-Sumatra railway line and the Trans-Kalimantan project, speaking at the inauguration of renovations to the heritage Semarang Tawang Station on 30 July 2026, according to Antara News and The Jakarta Post.

The Trans-Sumatra line is planned to connect Bakauheni, at the island's southern tip, to its northernmost region; Sumatra currently has several operational but disconnected railway networks. Kalimantan has no operational public railway network today. "After Trans-Sumatra is finished, we will move to Trans-Kalimantan. If possible, we will start at the same time," Prabowo said, according to Antara News.

No budget, contractor or construction timeline was disclosed for either project.
