Greater Copenhagen Light Rail Fully Opens After 28km, Two-Phase Build

Greater Copenhagen's new orbital light rail line is now fully operational after the August 22 opening of its second phase, a 14.9km northern extension from Rødovre Nord to Lundtofte that completes the 28km route between Ishøj and Lundtofte.

The inaugural service left Rødovre Nord at 10:30 carrying invited guests north along the extension, with ribbon-cutting ceremonies held at several of the 17 new stops added in this phase. Travel was free across the network on opening day, and operator figures put ridership at around 50,000 passengers.

The full line now serves 29 stations end to end, with services running every 10 minutes off-peak and every 5 to 8 minutes during peak periods. A complete end-to-end journey takes 58 minutes. Planners expect the line to carry approximately 14 million passengers annually by 2030 as it beds in and surrounding development matures.

Built in two phases, the line connects several Copenhagen suburbs that previously lacked direct rail links to each other, positioning it as an orbital complement to the radial S-train and Metro networks serving central Copenhagen.
