    Scope

CIM (Appendix B to the Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail, COTIF) is the uniform international contract law governing cross-border rail carriage of goods, setting out the rules for consignment notes, carrier liability, claims and disputes between shippers, carriers and consignees. It is the commercial-law backbone that every international rail freight movement and cross-border claim in the COTIF member-state area (most of Europe, parts of Asia and North Africa) is conducted under, and the natural counterpart to the operational GCU contract.
