Trenitalia Awards Hitachi Rail €260m Contract for Frecciarossa Fleet

Trenitalia has awarded Hitachi Rail a €260m contract to expand its Frecciarossa high-speed fleet to 74 trains by 2031. The Italian state operator will use the deal to increase capacity on its premium intercity services across the national network.

The contract represents Hitachi Rail's continued dominance in Italy's high-speed market, where its ETR.1000 platform faces growing competition from Chinese and European manufacturers. Trenitalia's fleet expansion comes as passenger demand recovers from pandemic lows and competition intensifies with private operator Italo. The additional trains will provide Trenitalia with greater scheduling flexibility and the ability to serve new routes or increase frequencies on existing corridors.

The order covers nine additional ETR.1000 trainsets, the platform that already forms the backbone of Trenitalia's flagship services. Deliveries run through 2031, with 2027 the heaviest year and the first train of the new batch due from July of that year. Hitachi Rail will manufacture the trains at its Italian facilities in Naples and Pistoia, supporting local employment and supply chains. The contract likely includes maintenance provisions, though specific service terms remain undisclosed.

Italy's high-speed rail market has become increasingly competitive since Italo entered service in 2012, forcing Trenitalia to modernize its fleet and improve service quality. The Frecciarossa expansion aligns with broader European trends toward rail investment as governments seek to reduce aviation emissions. Similar fleet renewals are underway across major European networks, including SNCF's TGV M orders and Deutsche Bahn's ICE L procurement.
