Romania: Siemens-Led Consortium Wins EUR308m Railway Signalling Modernisation Contracts

A consortium led by Siemens Mobility, together with ELSITEL and IMSAT, has been awarded three contracts worth a combined EUR308 million to modernise railway signalling and interlocking systems in Romania, Siemens said on 30 July 2026, following competitive public procurement by national infrastructure manager CFR SA.

The projects cover modernisation of signalling infrastructure across approximately 560 km of railway lines, including 66 stations, 13 centralised operation centres, 122 level crossings and more than 2,000 signals. Work will be carried out on lines and at stations managed by CFR's regional branches in Cluj, Timisoara, Iasi and Galati, replacing ageing electrodynamic and mechanical interlocking systems.

Marc Ludwig, CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, said: "Rail is essential for Romania's sustainable mobility future. These three projects will modernize critical signaling infrastructure across the country, improving safety, increasing network capacity and enabling more reliable rail services for passengers and freight."

Siemens said the upgrades are intended to improve safety, capacity and reliability, and to support EU decarbonisation goals. No project completion date was disclosed.

CFR's own confirmation of the contract signing on 21 July 2026 shows the Lot 2 portion alone -- covering the Cluj and Timisoara regional sectors, including new electronic interlockings at six stations in the Cluj area -- is worth 957.85 million lei (about EUR191.6 million) of the EUR308 million total, awarded to the Siemens Mobility-led association with IMSAT and Elsitel. Siemens Mobility currently has several open positions in Romania on its own careers site tracked by Railex, including a Site Manager and a Commissioning Engineer for electrification projects based in Bucharest.
