Alstom's Coradia Stream Fleet Takes Shape for Brenner Cross-Border Services

Tirol's Regional Minister for Mobility, Rene Zumtobel, and his Alto Adige counterpart, Daniel Alfreider, visited Alstom's Savigliano plant in Italy on August 5, 2026 to inspect production of new cross-border regional trains that will link Austria and Italy over the Brenner Pass, Railway Gazette International reported.

The two regions have jointly ordered 21 six-car Coradia Stream electric multiple units: Alto Adige's Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige is buying 15 trainsets, while OBB is acquiring six through its Verkehrsverbund Tirol public service contract. Alstom unveiled the first unit in May 2025.

Each 127.9-metre trainset seats 381 passengers and has a maximum speed of 160 km/h, with multi-voltage capability to run on Italy's 3kV DC system, Austria's 15kV 16.7Hz network, and the 25kV 50Hz electrification planned for the Vinschgau line. Once in service, the shared Euregio fleet will provide through regional connections linking Innsbruck, Brenner, Bolzano, Merano and Malles, removing the need for passengers to change trains at the Austrian-Italian border, a long-standing friction point on one of the Alps' busiest cross-border corridors.

An hourly Innsbruck-Bolzano service is scheduled to launch in mid-2027, with some services extended to Merano and Malles. The order underscores growing cross-border coordination on the Brenner corridor as construction continues on the Brenner Base Tunnel, due to open later this decade.
