    Scope

    NeTEx (Network and Timetable Exchange, CEN/TS 16614) is the Transmodel-derived European Technical Specification for exchanging static public transport data — network topology, timetables, fares and accessibility profiles — between planning, ticketing and passenger-information systems. It is the reference format the EU's MMTIS Delegated Regulation names for national access points to publish multimodal travel information for most public transport modes.

    NeTEx is organised in six parts building on the Transmodel conceptual model: Part 1 network topology (CEN/TS 16614-1:2014), Part 2 scheduled timetables (16614-2:2014), Part 3 fares (16614-3:2015), Part 4 the European Passenger Information Profile — EPIP (16614-4:2017), Part 5 alternative-modes exchange (16614-5:2021) and Part 6 the European Passenger Information Accessibility Profile — EPIAP (16614-6:2024). Deliverables include the normative CEN/TS text, a UML data model and a W3C XML Schema with example documents, usable under an open licence and maintained by the railML.org/Data4PT community on GitHub. NeTEx's practical importance comes from the EU's Multimodal Travel Information Services (MMTIS) framework: Delegated Regulation (EU) 2017/1926, as amended by (EU) 2024/490 of 29 November 2023, requires data holders to make static, historic and observed public transport data available through national access points using NeTEx CEN/TS 16614 (or a proven-compatible format) for most modes, with the legacy Reg. (EU) 454/2011 rail-ticketing formats reserved for international rail. This makes NeTEx, unlike most CEN/TS documents in this library, a de facto mandatory format for public-transport data publishers even though it carries no OJ citation and no presumption-of-conformity status under the Interoperability Directive — hence a legal_force of 'voluntary' with the MMTIS obligation explained here rather than encoded as harmonised. NeTEx is SIRI's static counterpart; both implement Transmodel and are commonly deployed together by infrastructure managers, transport authorities and mobility-data aggregators.
