EN 14750 — Railway applications — Air conditioning for urban, suburban and regional rolling stock — Comfort parameters and type tests

Scope

Specifies comfort parameters and the type-test programme for air conditioning and ventilation systems on urban, suburban and regional rolling stock — temperature and humidity control targets, air-change rates, and the climatic-chamber and in-service test methods used to verify them. Single consolidated standard since 2024, superseding and merging the former two-part EN 14750-1:2006 (comfort parameters) and EN 14750-2:2006 (test methods), with scope broadened from "urban and suburban" to also cover regional rolling stock.

EN 14750 sets the passenger-comfort targets and test regime for HVAC on the rolling-stock segment mainline TSIs do not reach: metros, trams, suburban EMUs and regional trains. It specifies target cabin temperature and humidity bands across defined external-climate categories, minimum fresh-air rates, permissible temperature gradients and draught limits, and the climatic-chamber type-test and in-service verification methods a manufacturer runs to demonstrate the installed system meets them. The 2024 edition consolidates what were previously two separate documents (Part 1: comfort parameters, Part 2: test methods) into one standard and — significantly — widens the scope from urban/suburban rolling stock to also explicitly cover regional vehicles, closing a gap between this standard and the mainline-only EN 13129. Because Directive (EU) 2016/797 and its TSIs apply only to the interoperable mainline network, EN 14750 sits outside the Interoperability Directive's scope and carries no OJ citation or presumption of conformity — it is a purely voluntary reference, but a near-universal one in metro and regional-rail procurement specifications across Europe. HVAC system suppliers, vehicle interior integrators, and operators writing passenger-comfort specifications for urban and regional fleets are its principal users; note that any older reference to EN 14750-1:2006 or EN 14750-2:2006 in a legacy specification should now be read as this consolidated 2024 edition, since both prior parts are withdrawn.
