DB InfraGO Reopens Hamburg–Berlin Corridor After Major Renewal Project
DB InfraGO reopened the Hamburg–Berlin rail corridor on 14 June 2026 after completing a major renewal project on one of Germany's busiest intercity routes.
The reopening restores through capacity on a corridor that carries both high-speed passenger services and significant freight volumes between Germany's second and third largest cities. The route forms a critical link in northern Germany's rail network, handling intercity express services and supporting freight connections to the Port of Hamburg.
The renewal project required a complete closure of the line, forcing rerouting of passenger and freight services during the works. DB InfraGO, the infrastructure arm of Deutsche Bahn, managed the programme to upgrade track, signalling and associated systems. The corridor now returns to normal operations with through running reinstated for both passenger operators and freight companies.
The Hamburg–Berlin route is a key artery in the German rail network, connecting the country's largest seaport with the capital and serving as a main line for both Deutsche Bahn's long-distance passenger services and rail freight operators accessing northern European markets. The completion of the renewal work removes a significant operational constraint that had been in place during the construction period.
