Deutsche Bahn Appoints Michael Obrowski as CFO Effective 1 September 2026

Germany's Deutsche Bahn has appointed Michael Obrowski as Chief Financial Officer, effective 1 September 2026. The Supervisory Board confirmed the appointment on 25 June 2026.

The appointment completes Deutsche Bahn's Management Board restructuring under CEO Evelyn Palla. Obrowski joins recent additions Bernhard Osburg, who leads Freight Transport, and Harmen van Zijderveld, responsible for Regional Transport. The board overhaul positions finance and IT under a single executive — functions Obrowski currently combines at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Obrowski, 57, is a board member at Volkswagen Group, where he has served since 2021 leading finance and IT departments at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. An industrial engineer by training, he brings extensive mobility sector finance experience to the state-owned railway operator. The combined remit of finance and IT at Deutsche Bahn mirrors his current responsibilities, offering operational continuity during the transition.

Deutsche Bahn operates Germany's national rail network, running passenger and freight services across 33,000 km of track. The operator has faced persistent financial pressure, with infrastructure renewal costs exceeding available budgets and performance targets falling short of government benchmarks. The CFO role carries direct responsibility for capital allocation across the operator's divisions — passenger long-distance, regional transport, freight, and infrastructure — alongside IT system modernisation programmes.

The September start date allows a three-month transition period. Obrowski's appointment follows established patterns in German industrial governance, with cross-sector executive movement between automotive and rail common among state-influenced enterprises. His automotive background contrasts with traditional railway finance careers but aligns with Deutsche Bahn's push toward digital transformation and integrated mobility platforms.
