Alstom launches commercial service on East of Nile Monorail in Greater Cairo
Alstom has launched commercial service on the East of Nile Monorail system in Greater Cairo, marking the operational debut of Egypt's first automated monorail network.
The project represents a significant technology deployment for urban transit in North Africa, where monorail systems remain rare compared to conventional metro networks. The automated system addresses Greater Cairo's acute public transport capacity constraints, serving a metropolitan area of over 20 million residents with limited rail connectivity east of the Nile River.
Alstom supplied the complete monorail system including rolling stock and signalling technology for the East of Nile line. The French manufacturer's Innovia monorail platform features fully automated operation without drivers. Commercial service begins following extensive testing and commissioning phases typical for new automated transit systems.
The East of Nile project forms part of Egypt's broader infrastructure modernisation programme, which includes the New Administrative Capital railway and planned high-speed rail connections. Monorail technology offers reduced construction costs compared to underground metro systems while providing grade-separated transit capacity for rapidly growing urban corridors.
