Italy Allocates €591.6m for Eight Road and Rail Projects Including Lombardy Routes

Italy has allocated €591.6m to complete funding for eight road and rail infrastructure projects, including routes in the Lombardy region of northern Italy.

The funding package addresses outstanding capital requirements for the eight schemes, which combine highway and railway infrastructure works. The allocation was announced on 28 June 2026, though the government has not disclosed the breakdown between rail and road projects or the timeline for completion.

Lombardy, Italy's most populous region and home to Milan, operates one of Europe's densest commuter rail networks. The region has pursued infrastructure upgrades in recent years to increase capacity on suburban corridors serving the Milan metropolitan area, though the government statement does not specify which Lombardy rail projects are included in the €591.6m package.

The funding represents a completion tranche rather than initial project finance, indicating the eight schemes were already under development with partial budgets in place. Italian infrastructure investment has accelerated under European Union recovery programmes, with rail modernisation forming a core element of national transport strategy. Lombardy's rail network carries over 800,000 passengers daily across regional and suburban services operated primarily by Trenord, the joint venture between Trenitalia and FNM.
