    SBB Launches CHF 3.3bn Zurich–Winterthur Four-Track Expansion for 2037

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has launched construction of the CHF 3.3bn MehrSpur Zürich–Winterthur programme, with completion scheduled for 2037. A groundbreaking ceremony on 2 July marked the start of works on the four-track expansion between Zurich and Winterthur.

The programme will significantly reduce journey times and increase capacity on one of Switzerland's busiest intercity corridors. The expansion includes construction of the Brüttener Tunnel, station upgrades and two additional tracks across key sections of the route.

The CHF 3.3bn investment covers infrastructure works scheduled through 2037, with the Brüttener Tunnel forming the centrepiece of the expansion. Station upgrade works will proceed in parallel with track construction. SBB has not disclosed the tunnel length or specific station improvement details.

The Zurich–Winterthur line carries heavy commuter and intercity traffic. The four-track layout will separate faster long-distance services from regional trains, removing operational conflicts that currently constrain timetable density. The project ranks among SBB's largest ongoing infrastructure programmes by capital outlay and construction timeline.
